Tax Bills: We’ll prioritise support for Tinubu over loyalty to governors – Reps deputy spokesman

The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Rep. Philip Agbese, has declared that lawmakers in the lower chamber will support President Bola Tinubus Tax Reform Bills, defying calls from state governors for their withdrawal.  Agbese described the proposed legislation as critical to economic growth, affirming that members of the House are united in backing the bills, even at the expense of clashing with their respective governors. Agbese revealed that some governors have resorted to threats, warning lawmakers that their chances of securing return tickets in the 2027 elections could be jeopardized if they support the bills. However, he maintained that the legislators are undeterred, stating that their loyalty lies with their constituents and the nations best interests rather than with political power brokers. The proposed reforms, transmitted to the National Assembly on September 3, 2024, are part of recommendations by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms, headed by Taiwo Oyedele. The bills aim to overhaul Nigerias tax system, streamline administration, and create a robust legal framework to minimize disputes and enhance revenue generation. President Tinubu has dismissed calls for their withdrawal, suggesting that adjustments could be made during parliamentary debates to address stakeholders concerns. Agbese reiterated that the House is determined to ensure the bills pass into law with necessary amendments to reflect national interests. He described the 10th House as intellectually capable and progressive, highlighting its readiness to work across party lines to support legislation that aligns with Speaker Tajudeen Abasss vision for a united and functional legislature. Quoting scripture, Agbese said, Behold, they shall surely gather, but not by me. Whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake, dismissing threats from governors as futile. He assured Nigerians that the proposed legislation would undergo thorough scrutiny, with copies of the bills already distributed to lawmakers for study and input ahead of the second reading. Agbese expressed optimism that the tax reform bills would pass, polished with what he called a touch of patriotism and intellectualism, to reboot the economy and set Nigeria on a path to sustainable development. The post Tax Bills: Well prioritise support for Tinubu over loyalty to governors Reps deputy spokesman appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
