Iâve walked into rooms where the greeting is: âGood morning, sirsâ and Iâm standing right there – Bella Adenuga-Disu shares experience with workplace bias
Bella Adenuga-Disu, the Executive Vice Chairman of Globacom and daughter of billionaire businessman, Dr. Mike Adenuga, has shared her experience with workplace bias, recalling a few instances when she was overlooked. The CEO of a real estate company, who disclosed this in a message on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2025, stressed the importance of women advocating for themselves at work, being firm and unapologetic. “Ive walked into rooms where the greeting is: Good morning, sirs. And Im standing right there,” she wrote. It doesnt happen all the time, but when it does, its a reminder that women arent just overlooked; sometimes, were invisible. Thats why advocating for ourselves is so important. It doesnt mean shouting to be heard, it can be as simple as saying, Actually, I wasnt addressed, or Id like to ensure my perspective is considered. Firm. Polite. Unapologetic. Then we move on, no over-explaining, no dwelling on it. But speaking up isnt just about being seen in the moment, its about reclaiming space in every part of our lives. Women have spent years pouring into others: families, careers, communities, often at the cost of themselves. Now, more women are recognizing that prioritizing their own growth isnt selfish; its necessary. I love seeing women stand up and say, Its my time. Owning their ambitions. Stepping into leadership. Speaking with authority. Taking the opportunities they once hesitated to claim. This years International Womens Day reminds us to take action – not just for others, but for ourselves too. Happy International Womens Day.
